Cumaru in a public setting

A warmer brown appearance study. Keep product identity, drying condition and replacement matching in the submittal.

01 / COORDINATION

Recognize the material, then specify the product

IPT identifies Cumaru in its sheet as Dipteryx odorata. It describes high density, interlocked grain and light yellowish-brown heartwood. The appearance study above is a design reference in a fixed promenade scene, not a measured sample or a promise about a shipment’s color.

Ask the supplier to identify the offered material and attach that identity to the sample, quotation and delivery record. Retain the actual thickness, width, profile and supplied condition. A commercial boardwalk purchase needs these fields even if the owner has already chosen Cumaru on appearance.

02 / COORDINATION

Give machining and drying their own review

The IPT sheet describes difficult working and drilling, and warns of gluing difficulty associated with the wood’s oily nature. It also distinguishes air drying from kiln drying. These observations are reasons to ask about the supplied product and fabrication process, not instructions to choose a drying cycle or drill size from a web page.

Before production, resolve which pieces are factory machined, which cuts remain in the field and how the selected connection is installed. Show any change of profile at borders, transitions or removable sections. If a clip chart distinguishes drying conditions, retain that condition in the system record; a species name alone does not resolve the chart.

The site team also needs a receiving and storage brief appropriate to the delivered material. Keep that with the installation documents so an earlier quotation description does not become the only record of the actual supply.

03 / COORDINATION

Do not read ground-contact evidence as marine approval

IPT reports strong resistance to decay organisms for Cumaru heartwood but separately reports poor resistance to marine borers in field testing. Those are different exposures. A favorable general durability description must not be turned into permission to use a product below water or in a particular marine assembly.

For a marina promenade, first establish whether the boards are the above-water walking surface or part of a component with another exposure. The marine designer and exact product documentation resolve the assembly. Keep screws, clips, adjacent metals and support conditions within that review; wood durability does not approve the connection.

04 / COORDINATION

Review Cumaru substitutions as changes to a package

When Cumaru is proposed in place of another material, list what stays the same and what changes. Examine the actual board section, machining, supplied condition, length assortment, connection and finish. Even a visually similar alternative may require a different accepted detail or work sequence.

Fictional example: a replacement offer uses the same nominal width but a different actual profile. The material takeoff can still show the same area while the installed interface remains unresolved. Hold the fit question open until the drawing and selected system requirements are compared. A price comparison should include the revised machining and accessories, not just the boards.

05 / COORDINATION

Make appearance and operations work together

Use a sample review to agree acceptable variation and the intended surface treatment. Then ask the owner how cleaning, inspection and future selective replacement fit the operating calendar. A warm-brown appearance preference does not determine the frequency or cost of those tasks.

Keep installed-lot locations and spare-material references in closeout. For later repairs, compare the new package with the actual installed record. If a color difference matters to the owner, record that expectation without promising an exact match or an exact weathering timetable. Detailed lifecycle comparisons belong in the lifecycle resource; this page focuses on Cumaru in a commercial supply decision.
